Volunteer Program Opportunities |
Become a Winslow Farm Volunteer/Intern
The Winslow Farm Volunteer and Internship Program is for people who want to work with animals. This intensive training program offers students and adults alike, hands-on experience in animal care, socialization, behavior and rescue as the participate in the daily work of the sanctuary. Our program provides a unique opportunity to work at Norton’s only lifetime-care sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals.
Animals often arrive at the Winslow Sanctuary with problems ranging from severe injuries and illness to significant behavioral difficulties. The sanctuary volunteer staff does its best to nurture them on all levels, through a combination of excellent medical care, healthful food and lots of love and attention.
Many cat’s lives, for example, have been turned around, and occasionally, some that arrive here are ultimately placed in loving homes. Those that are un-adoptable due to physical or behavioral problems have a home at the sanctuary for life.
Winslow Farm volunteers and interns provide enormous help to the animals and also staff the sanctuary. At the same time, our program can help those with an interest in animal care get a head start on a lifelong commitment to animals in need.
Who Can Participate?
Our volunteer program is open to:
- Individuals 10 years of age or higher, with an interest in animal care.
- Animal care professionals, such as veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
- Students working toward degrees in animal related fields.
Internship Opportunites:
High School students ages 16-17 may intern for a week during spring or winter breaks, or for two weeks in the summer, (please contact Debra White for open schedules).
Students 10 and up may participate in month-long or year-long programs. Internships sessions can be designed to meet student needs, such as:
- Satisfying school service requirements.
- Pursuing specific educational goals.
- Discovering different animal welfare career options.
- Learning how to start a sanctuary or rescue organization.
Our program welcomes students seeking degrees in veterinary medicine and other animal care professions. Interns may work along side staff in the daily care of resident animals, or participate in our animal rehabilitation program. Daily hands-on experience in animal care helps interns and volunteers sharpen observation skills, learn animal handling techniques and gain greater understanding of animal socialization.
What will I be doing?
The daily routine at Winslow is physically demanding. We care for hundreds of animals each day, the majority of which are cats, but we also have rabbits, birds, horses, mules, sheep, goats and llamas.
Depending on the schedule, daily activities can include:
- Feeding, exercising and cleaning up after the animals
- Lifting heavy bags
- Cleaning catteries, petting farm grounds and horse stalls.
What is required?
The demands of animal care vary from day to day, so willingness to work and flexibility are very important. The seasonably changing climate of New England demands good physical condition and stamina.
The program is voluntary and interns and volunteers are expected to cover their own expenses.
